This vintage wooden clothes hanger is stamped “Rice Hotel Houston” and comes from one of the city’s most storied old landmarks. The Rice Hotel was not just another downtown hotel. Its site traces back to the early Republic of Texas era, when Houston briefly served as the capital, and the property later evolved through several hotel lives before becoming the famous Rice Hotel.
The grand Rice Hotel building opened in 1913 and became one of downtown Houston’s signature addresses, hosting travelers, events, public figures, and decades of city life. After closing in the 1970s, the historic building was eventually restored and reimagined as residential lofts, keeping the Rice name alive in Houston’s architectural memory.
