Why Soccer Jerseys Have Become Modern Collectibles

Why Soccer Jerseys Have Become Modern Collectibles

Have you ever smelled something, heard a song, witnessed an event, or tasted a favorite food and instantly been transported back to a different time in your life?

Maybe I'm wired differently, but it happens to me all the time.

For example, I'm a Gen Xer, and I still flinch whenever I see footage of a space shuttle launch because I watched the Challenger explode while sitting in my seventh-grade science class. As a Mexican-American, the smell of fresh tortillas reminds me of my grandmother's house, where my cousins and I ran around the yard before gathering in the kitchen to eat tortillas with butter and jelly. Certain songs carry memories too. The song Pajarito Colibrí by Natalia Lafourcade will forever be tied to the day my beloved bulldog, Pudge, crossed the rainbow bridge.

Some things simply become anchors for our memories.

People often ask me why I collect soccer jerseys. If you've seen the photo of my closet, you already know the collection has grown into something substantial. I also realize the state of that closet may cause immediate anxiety for organized people. If you're one of those people, feel free to stop by and help.

But what looks like a crowded closet to some people is actually a collection of memories.

Most of those jerseys belong to Los Rayados de Monterrey, my favorite club in Liga MX. The second-largest group belongs to El Tri, Mexico's national team. The rest come from clubs and players I've followed throughout the years.

I own several Fulham jerseys because I've always been a huge fan of Clint Dempsey, who I still believe is the greatest American player to ever step onto the pitch. I own several PSV Eindhoven shirts because the club has played an important role in the development of players I enjoy watching, including Ricardo "El Tren" Pepi, Malik Tillman, Sergiño Dest, Hirving "Chucky" Lozano, and Carlos Salcido.

There are Real Betis jerseys because I started following the club when Andrés Guardado played there. I followed Bayer Leverkusen because Mexican legend Javier "Chicharito" Hernández wore their colors. I'm an FC Dallas season ticket holder because North Texas is home, and I spend countless nights cheering them on.

But the Rayados?

They're my One Ring to Rule Them All.

No matter who they're playing, that's my team.

Which brings us back to the jerseys.

Most of the shirts in my collection are connected to a specific memory. Some of my favorites aren't the rarest, most valuable, or most expensive.

They're simply the most meaningful.

I still have the first jersey I wore to a Rayados match. I treasure my FC Dallas Ricardo Pepi jersey because I followed his journey from the academy all the way to PSV and the U.S. Men's National Team. Right now, one of my favorites is a Folarin Balogun AS Monaco jersey because watching his career continue to develop has been a lot of fun.

Every Rafa Márquez, Santiago Giménez, Raúl Jiménez, Edson "El Machín" Álvarez, or Humberto Suazo jersey in my closet carries a story. Some remind me of childhood. Others remind me of a particular match, a season, a goal, a celebration, or a period of my life that I look back on fondly.

That's why I collect.

Everyone has a different reason for collecting the things they love. Some collect for rarity. Some collect for value. Some collect for nostalgia. Some collect because the hunt itself is exciting.

But at the end of the day, most collections are really about memories.

The objects themselves are just reminders of moments that mattered.

And in a world that often moves too fast, holding onto a few happy memories isn't such a bad thing.

If you're looking to create a few memories of your own, take a look through the jersey collection here at Second Half Supply Co. You may just find a shirt that reminds you of a favorite player, a championship season, or a moment you'll never forget.

Happy hunting,
