New is boring.
I've always had a soft spot for the "good old days," and I think that's one of the reasons thrifting appeals to me so much. Walking into a thrift store feels like an adult Easter egg hunt. You're surrounded by a sea of discarded garments, forgotten gadgets, old books, collectibles, and who knows what else. Most of it may not be for you, but every now and then you stumble across gold.
Maybe it's that special unicorn item you've been searching for. A vintage t-shirt from years gone by. An old jacket from your favorite sports team. Or, in my case, that special fútbol jersey that instantly brings back memories.
My better half, Lindy, enjoys the hunt just as much as I do. Oddly enough, thrifting has become one of the things we genuinely enjoy doing together. While some people walk into a thrift store and see nothing but junk, we see second chances. Second chances for clothes. Second chances for collectibles. And second chances for people searching for something meaningful.
At first, thrifting can be overwhelming. Flipping through thousands of shirts, jeans, jackets, shoes, and random treasures can feel exhausting. But over time, you develop an eye for the things that matter to you.
For me, it might be the corner of a sponsor logo peeking out from a rack of shirts. I spot it from halfway down the aisle, and suddenly the hunt is on. Other times it's the patch on a pair of jeans or the three stripes on my favorite brand of shoes. Whatever your passion may be, every trip becomes an adventure.
Part of the appeal is nostalgia.
Old things remind us of great moments. A championship season. A favorite player. A first date. A concert. A family vacation. A piece of history connected to our own lives.
My addiction happens to be fútbol jerseys.
Why? Because every jersey tells a story. I remember the goals, the saves, the players, the rivalries, and the moments attached to certain shirts. I suspect most collectors feel the same way. Once you've built a collection, you start chasing the elusive pieces that have escaped you for years. The rare one. The difficult one. The one that keeps you searching.
Ironically, jerseys weren't what first pulled me into thrift stores.
Years ago, when I was still collecting comic books, my wife dragged me into a thrift store against my will. While wandering around, I stumbled across a copy of The Amazing Spider-Man #101, the first appearance of Morbius. At the time, the book was worth hundreds of dollars.
The price on the thrift store copy?
$1.50.
That moment changed everything.
Suddenly, thrift stores weren't places full of old stuff. They became treasure hunts.
Since then, my interests have evolved. I've bought my fair share of jerseys, and I've certainly made mistakes along the way. Like many collectors, I've accidentally purchased a fake jersey or two while learning how to spot authentic pieces. Every mistake taught me something. Every find taught me something else.
But through it all, the thing that keeps me coming back is the thrill of the hunt.
I'm also a guy who loves a good deal. If I can avoid paying full price, I'm usually interested. Thrifting satisfies that part of my personality while also creating opportunities to find items with history, character, and value.
That's a big part of why we started Second Half Supply Co.
We wanted to create a place where great items get a second life. A place where vintage apparel, jerseys, collectibles, comics, and unique finds can move from one owner to the next instead of ending up in a landfill. As a bonus, thrifting is also one of the easiest ways to reduce waste and keep perfectly good products in circulation.
We've worked to curate a collection of interesting finds, nostalgic treasures, and everyday items that still have plenty of life left in them. Some are rare. Some are practical. Some are just plain fun.
