A couple of weeks ago, I told the story about my wife, Lindy, dragging me into a thrift store for the first time against my will.

It was one of those compromises spouses make because they love each other. Kind of like the countless soccer matches, Florida State football games, and other adventures she's patiently endured because I wanted to go. To be fair, she also tolerates more than a few of my neurotic quirks without complaint.

Looking back, she probably had no idea she was about to create a monster.

On that first trip, I wandered around without much enthusiasm until I stumbled across a copy of The Amazing Spider-Man #101.

For comic book collectors, that's a significant issue because it marks the first appearance of Morbius.

The price?

$1.50.

At the time, it was worth hundreds of dollars.

I bought it immediately.

What I didn't realize was that the comic wasn't the real treasure that day.

It was the beginning of a completely different hobby.

Nearly thirty years later, I finally sold that comic for a healthy profit. Naturally, the proceeds found their way into another collection...this time in the form of a Guillermo Ochoa World Cup jersey from Russia.

I was thrilled.

Until I tried it on.

In my excitement, I had accidentally ordered a size smaller than I wear. Let's just say I looked less like an international football supporter and more like a bag full of rabbits trying to escape.  The "culprit" is today's photo.

So the jersey became what collectors affectionately call a "closet queen." Every now and then I'd pull it out, admire it for a few minutes, and then carefully put it back.

Then something unexpected happened.

Guillermo Ochoa stepped onto the pitch during the 2026 World Cup, becoming one of the few players ever to appear in six World Cups.

Suddenly, interest in his jerseys increased.

I listed mine for sale and made more than I originally paid for it.

Timing is everything.

When I think about it, timing has always been the story behind my love of thrifting.

If that comic book hadn't been sitting on a shelf in a small thrift store a few blocks from Pensacola Beach all those years ago, I honestly don't know if I would have become a thrifter. Maybe I would have eventually, but that $1.50 discovery accelerated everything.

That little thrift store became my training ground.

Treasure hunting isn't all that different from thrifting.

You spend hours digging.

Sometimes you leave empty-handed.

Sometimes you find something that makes the entire day worthwhile.

That's what keeps you coming back.

Lindy jokes that I could easily become a gambler.

She's probably right.

The difference is that I'd rather walk away holding something tangible than a betting slip. A vintage jersey. A comic book. A forgotten collectible. A pair of perfectly broken-in jeans.

New is predictable.

Treasure isn't.

Finding a vintage piece tucked into the wrong aisle or discovering a collectible that somehow slipped through unnoticed is still every bit as exciting today as it was on that first trip.

And getting to share those adventures with my favorite treasure-hunting partner makes them even better.

Jimmy Buffett captured the feeling perfectly in A Pirate Looks at Forty:

"Yes, I am a pirate, two hundred years too late. The cannons don't thunder, there's nothing to plunder..."

Maybe that's true.

But who needs a cannon when the sound of the cash register rings just as sweet?

Think of it as one lesson the business taught me over the past month.

Lesson #1

Don't let excitement overrule common sense.

We've all been there.

You spot something you've been looking for, your pulse speeds up, and suddenly you're halfway to the checkout before you've asked the important questions.

Does it fit?

Is it authentic?

Are there hidden defects?

Am I paying the right price?

Does it still fit within my sourcing plan and budget?

Excitement is one of the best parts of thrifting.

Just don't let it make your decisions for you.
